Exodus: Leader's Guide for Lesson One

The Vocation and Formation of Moses

Part 1: Introduction

Suggestion:

While people are gathering, ask them to take a seat at any table and introduce themselves to those they might not know. If time permits, before the session begins hand out the Bible Sleuth exercise and allow the group to work on the task together. When you are ready to begin the Bible study, start with an Opening Prayer (either the one below or a prayer of your own choosing).

Opening Prayer:

Lord God, create in me a listening heart and an obedient will. Help me to read your sacred word with diligent patience and receive your wisdom with joyful courage. Send forth your Holy Spirit to rest upon me now. Help me to listen respectfully to others as they share their search for your truth, and give me confidence to share what I have found with them. May I apply myself wholly to this text and then apply this holy text to myself. Amen.

Suggestion:

After welcoming everyone and making any important announcements, such as location of the rest rooms and a reminder to set cell phones to vibrate or turn them off, then read out loud "Setting the Stage." You can introduce it as a brief word from the author of this Bible study to set the context for this lesson.
